Oct. 11, 2008 - Jamestown, AL
Though conditions didn't look too promising as the day began, the Atlanta Climbing Club enjoyed a great day on the rock for the October club trip to Jamestown, AL.
Mist and sprinkles greeted club members as they gathered at the Windy Hill car pool. Denmark, Chuck, Robert, Cathi, Lucius, Brent, Adam, Derek and Mona set off in a two-car caravan, not knowing Harry had been late for the rendezvous. Fortunately, he was able to catch up with the group and negotiate the backroad bypass of Rome without getting lost. The group was joined at Jamestown by Trisha, Frank, Enid, Carole, Gary, Jeff and Brei, making for one of the biggest club turnouts of the year.
After negotiating the new farm gates on Mr. King's property, the club hiked up to the Harvest Wall to get on some great leads:
- Little Big Horn (5.9), led by Frank
- Plain Truth (5.9) -- Gary
- Truth or Consequences (5.8) -- Chuck
- Yum Yum Tree (5.7) -- Chuck
- Pigsty (5.8) -- Denmark
Further down on the Winter Wall, club members were leading some of its classic lines:
- Winter's Respite (5.8) -- Robert
- Loose Block (5.7) -- Trisha and Carole (team lead)
- Registration (The Arch) (5.9+) -- Robert and Lucius (team lead)
Additionally, the adventurous members toproped Hairdressers on Fire, a stiff 5.11c sport route. And it was a day of firsts for some in the group: Enid made her first pull of a roof on Truth or Consequences; Lucius took his first trad lead fall on Registration/The Arch; and Adam enjoyed his first club trip.
Contrary to the misty morning conditions, the weather was great at Jamestown, with a few clouds, some sun and an occasional breeze. With the day winding down, many of the group hit the road at around 5:30, but some club members had to get in another climb or two. The last stragglers hiked out at 7 p.m. at dusk with headlamps. On the way home, the later crowd stopped at Las Palmas in Rome for great and filling Mexican food to round out a full day.
